Independent Greyhound Racing Review
On Tuesday November 27th Lord Donoughue released his indepth independent
review of the greyhound industry in Great Britain. Lord Donoughue's team
of five have been gathering evidence for a review of UK Greyhound Racing
since last year following disturbing revelations about the welfare of
greyhounds that come to the end of their racing careers. Notably such
reports as builders' merchant David Smith, of Seaham, County Durham, has
killed and buried 10,000 animals over 15 years from this article on the
BBC website.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/wear/5185234.stm
The report's suggestions boil down to the introduction of a new single
independent governing body and proposals to directly ensure the welfare for
ex-racing dogs. The report acknowledges the need for increased drug
testing but stresses the difficulties and costs involved. I believe that
after the vital issue of greyhound welfare is tackled the scandal of doping
in the sport must be addressed if it is to be taken as a serious sport for
gambling.
The report makes the recommendation that the greyhound racing industry
should remain self-regulated under the stewardship of a new body called the
Greyhound Board of Great Britain (GBGB). The importance of the new board's
independence is fundamental and a separate stewards' disciplinary committee
is to be established to address the infighting which plagued progress
between the NGRC and BGRB.
To address the vital issue of the welfare of retired racing dogs the report
proposes that registration fees be increased and a percentage be returned
to the owner on evidence that the greyhound's future upon retirement has
been secured. For us the most sensible proposal is that all greyhounds
should be registered by the time of ear-marking (12-15 weeks) and then
tracked to the time they are responsibly rehomed, with all breeders
licensed by the Regulator and subject to veterinary supervision.
In summation Lord Donoughue rightly acknowledges the caring nature of the
vast majority of those engaged within the sport. We are confident that
everyone involved with greyhound racing would welcome at least part of Lord
Donoughue's findings and see greyhound racing going only from strength to
strength.

The Latest from Our Tips
Last month I mentioned Lance's new method that would use the same system
for all courses. We found that for Walthamstow and Sunderland this system
was producing the best results so went live a couple of weeks ago. Sadly
since then for Walthamstow we have had failed to pick any winners from 15
races. However at Sunderland it is a completely different story where we
picked 11 out of 22 winners ( compared to the favourite coming home 9 times
out of 22)!
Clearly there is still a lot of work to be done before we can all retire on
the predictions. Our focus during the festive season will be a new system
for displaying the results hopefully with a longer history this should
make it easier to find patterns and tipping strategies.
Greyhound Stadiums
I am sure I do not have to say anything about how great a night at the dogs
is. As another example of the sports expanding popularity Kinsley
Greyhound Stadium - near Pontefract, West Yorkshire has invested in a new
restaurant and improved facilities.

Kinsley is one of the latest Greyhound Track in Britain to be licensed by
the NGRC and holds racing on Friday and Saturday Evenings and Sunday
afternoons. Leave a note on the forum if you have been or are planning a
visit and let us know how you get on.

Black Country The People's 50 Million Lottery Giveaway
Finally an off-topic blatant plug for your vote in the National Lottery's
Peoples 50 Million contest. Projects have been selected across the
country for lottery funding. I believe the under invested Black Country
thoroughly deserves the funding for this exciting project :
"A green bridge park will bring the countryside into our town centres
comprising of a 12-mile pedestrian, cycleway and bridleway with a visitor
centre at the RSPB Reserve in the middle, linked by a new landmark bridge
over the A41 and a low carbon footprint visitor centre at Barr Beacon
offering fantastic views across the Midlands to Wales."
Please find the time to log on to the web site, register and vote for the
Black Country project.
